Just Two Ordinary Lads
They were just two ordinary lads who, liked a pint, liked a laugh and tried to make the most of a bad time. One of their favorite pubs was the Market House
in Forton Road. Whenever possible they would get to the pub to meet up with the locals for a pint and a laugh. They were nicknamed "Abbott and Costello", not just because they played around like them but,
they actually looked like them. Their favorite "targets" in the pub were Sarah "Sal" M----n and her mum. If Sal and her mum weren't in the pub when the lads got there, they would go straight
round to their house, drag them out to the pub informing them that their drink's are getting cold.
My Mum would be on the piano, mums mate Vera and her mum and dad were there and the lads would then start their act, "Bud and Lou", again to
everyones enjoyment. They would get Sal and her mum a drink then, two minutes later ask them if they wanted another,"aven't finished this one yet" was the answer, Bud and Lou would then take the drinks,
knock them back in one and say, "yes you ave" and promptly get them another. A few minutes before closing time they would disappear, Sal would say, "where are those two ooligans then?", oh in the
gents was the answer, tell them to be good and we'll see them next time. Sal and her mum would then head for home. Outside the pub, on Forton Road, was a grit bin, as Sal and her mum got level with it, the top would
suddenly burst open and two heads popped out and shouted "bout time you were indoors". After calling the lads every name in the book, they would be escorted safely home by the lads.
One day the lads were nowhere to be seen. Everybody were saying, where's Bud and Lou? It was June 6th 1944. One of the lads was a British soldier, the other
lad was with the North Nova Scotia regiment. A few days later, lads in hospital blues were seen walking and sitting in Forton Rec. Mum and Vera were walking past, on their way home from work, and looking to see
if there were any they knew. Vera said, that lad there looks a bit like one of our lads, they went closer to see, and he was one of the lads. They said, trying to make light of it, where's trouble then?, meaning the
other lad, he just looked up at them and shook his head. Not a word was spoken. Mum and Vera then went over the road to Veras mums house, just opposite the rec, opened the door, looked round and he was gone. They
never saw Bud and Lou again. Just two ordinary lads. Alan Baptist 2007
