- Dr Patrick McWilliams is looking for information on Major-General Sir Thomas Aiskew Larcom, RE, KCB, Bart. He was a leading light in the first Ordnance Survey of Ireland and later became under-secretary of Ireland (1853-68), i.e. The day-to-day head of the British administration in Dublin Castle. He was knighted for his services in the late 1860s. In his final years he returned to Hampshire. My interest in him stems research work on the OS of Ireland and he was a key person in my PhD thesis. I propose to publish his private papers (which are in Dublin) and write a biography of him who was a friend to Ireland for more than 50 years. (23/7/06)

- I have received information about the Haslar Petition on the Downing St web site, I thought I would ask you whether it is the sort of thing you would be happy with? My concern is where to draw the line and that a large proportion of the visitors to this site are from abroad. There is the Gosport.info blog which could be a place for these items or a forum. The MyGosport one no longer allows me to log in, so unless someone confirms one is still there, I could follow up an enquiry from the Whiteley Forum who are in the process of including a Hampshire Discussion Forum on that site, which does include information about the Haslar Petition. Please let me know if you feel these more political items would be OK for Gosport.info web site, the Gosport.info Blog, Hampshire Forums. Ian Jeffery (18/02/07)
