Hello, Can you help solve a puzzle? My Gt
Gt grandfather and Gt Gt grandmother James and Mary Pope were living at 92 Forton Road in 1898. Can you tell me if this address was, or is, a public house? Thanks Dorothy Cox[
Hello Dorothy, Thank you for your
e-mail.
I understand that Madelines (previously Queen Charlotte opposite St John Church) is number 122 Forton Road and what was Chidlows was 46 Forton Road, per Ron Brown's book, 'Time
Gentlemen Please' there was a a pub called The Cricketer's, but I am not sure how far along.
In Mrs Turner,'s book, 'Forton St John's School and the Forton District' there
is a bit by a member of the Miller family, saying that a Mr Miller owned a pub called 'Military Arms' opposite Elm Grove, which was next to Crosslands. Counting back from Madelines could be 92.
There is also a map of the area in the book, it can be found at;
There are
no numbers on the map, it seems to be the only pub in the correct place according to the map, it seems that the Miller's owned the property on the corner of St John's Square at the time. The
house 92 must have been in that block, now garland Court, but which house I am not sure.
Let me know if you want the request for information added to Gosport.info.
Hope it helps, best
wishes. Ian Jeffery
Many thanks for your very prompt reply. I am assuming that 92 Forton is now no more and the site is a block of flats. The 1898 Kellys Directories may help, perhaps I'll try that
source. May I bore you with why I wish to know ? My Gt Gt.grandfather James Pope owned and worked a Mill at Kingsclere, Hants in 1863. The Mill is named Pope's Mill after him, as is the Hill on which
it stood. The Newbury Weekly News of June 1868 reports a disastrous fire at the Millhouse when the family lost all their belongings. Mary Pope (gt.gt.gran) was reported not to have survived due to the
injuries she received in the blaze. James was fortunately insured and moved away setting himself up as a Publican. (But where?). My family have always believed that Mary died as reported, but I have
recently discovered that she in fact survived another thirty years dying aged 63 at 92 Forton in 1898. The Death Certificate describes James (her widower) as a licensed Victualler. Other sources have
also described him as a Publican.
Thanks again, Dorothy Cox
P.S Any relation
to Elizabeth Jeffryes, Spinster who was executed on Sat Mar 28 1752 on Epping Forest for the murder of her uncle?
