Here is a short story about my wife Doreen Haggard and how it came to her writing a book about Bourkes Parakeet.
It started in April 1995 we had just moved to Normandy Gardens off ( Anns Hill Road ) and we had quite a large garden and thought we would have a aviary, after 2 weeks
we had built the aviary and brought our first pair of rosa bourke parakeets off a nice lady in Brockhurst Road, it wasn’t long before they had settled in and to are amazement had started to lay
eggs in the nest box, we thought we would go out and buy a book on this bird but none were available ...anywhere,
I said to my wife as a joke ( it makes you want to write one ) and that’s how we started, first we got in touch with Kingdom Books in Waterlooville
one of the largest animal writing book in the world, they gave us the go ahead after a bit of research just to make sure there wasn’t a book on them. by this time we had added to our birds
and in total had 30 breeding pairs and from them had 48 chicks in are first year, we use to sell our baby birds at bird sales for round about £20 to £25. After hundreds of photos and about 22000 words
the book was ready to be published. it was sold world wide Australia, United states of America, Canada and Japan were the main countries it was sold in, with America selling 117,000 copies alone, the
book sold for £7.95 and every book sold we got 49p....Andy Haggard
