I’ve just come across your site again after quite some time with a large photo of what I recall as a
builders merchant’s premises, going towards the Ferry about 2-300 yds past St Vincent ,a three story place on the corner ,in fact next to the oil depot. That is as familiar to me as
anywhere in "old" Gosport, I must have passed it almost daily, certainly as a Boy Seaman we marched past there on the way to the Harbour for boating. Never been in there but it
still looks a substantial building and a handsome one too. What is it used for today and do you know its history? Tony-Perth-Australia

I first remember the building as Wheelers builders merchants, though I understand the building was a Kellets
& Childs Warehouse, a department store I think. Covers took it over more recently. I have been in the building a few times though towards the end the state was bad. I have used the photo
as about 2 years ago the building was demolished and a new building has been built, with a Co-OP and Pizza Place on the ground floor with flats above. Quite a shame, I feel. Best
regards, Ian Jeffery

G,day Ian,
Well another old landmark gone, much more and I would not recognise the place except for the rows of terrace houses,a lot
of handsome and distinctive buildings have been razed to the ground in old Gosport, survived the worst of the Luftwaffe and all part of my youth, now gone forever, talk about the Vandals
and the Goths,I suppose the Duck House survives?Do you think there is any soul left in the "old town" Ian ?????Funny thing is despite the warts and all bit you still look back as
part of you to the place where you are born, grew up as a child and became a man,I have many good and bad memories of those days ,especially at the end of the War and it,s
aftermath, times were so hard ,but I concentrate on the good and the very happy days that will not come again,on family and friends and familiar landmarks,on faces I recall so clearly even at
71, buildings I have been in so many times now gone,Lee Tower for example, who of today,s generation could ever visualise what was there or that the little building I think is still there was
once the railway station.of the two swimming pools, open air ones at Lee and Gosport, filled with happy laughter. With other mates we snuck into Gosport Baths one night and skinny dipped
in the moonlight, and got ourselves into the bombed out Ritz and the old Police station.Keep up the good work Ian,although I,ve never had feedback from my "memories" I did hear that
one or two are still alive and kicking !! Tony Weekes
