Only the few were capable of gaining prizes, certainly to the
extent that Ella Smith did, but it is to be hoped that most of the pupils of St. John’s School gained in some way from their attendance there. Some continued their studies elsewhere to gain
qualifications which fitted them for their various careers. Some became teachers, some worked in offices and of course, there must have been many more kinds of work which they did. Some of
the boys worked in Portsmouth Dockyard and probably in other similar establishments. Whatever their job in life, hopefully, this school of St. John’s, Forton, was instrumental in helping them
to come nearer to a knowledge of “the Way, the Truth and the Life”, so that they were (and are) able to live their lives in accordance with
God’s will.
