Ella Smith did excellent work in Religious Knowledge for 3 years running and
had a similar certificate to that of Maud Vear. The details on it were as follows:-
Date of Inspection
19.11.24
3.11.25
2.11.26
Diocesan Inspector
A.M.H. Dbouley
J. Cairns
John A. Kirby, M.A.
S.A. Johns, Headmistress - R. O’Gorman Power, Incumbent Theodore Winton, Bishop of the Diocese.
Mr. A. Jolliffe must have been a very busy man. He
travelled round to different schools in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight giving lectures on “Alcohol and the Human Body” on behalf of the Band
of Hope. He displayed charts with diagrams and captions to illustrate his talk. Afterwards the children wrote essays complete with drawings on the subject for which they later received
certificates. Ella Smith received First Class Certificate of Merit in 1925, 1926 and 1927 as well as 2 second class ones in 1922 and 1924.
The Band of Hope Certificates were more colourful than the Diocesan
ones. The designs in the borders were in blue, green and gold. The lettering was in red and gold.
The Hampshire Crest was at the centre top and Portsmouth Town Hall at centre
bottom. At the sides of the certificates were pictures of Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight, Romsey Abbey, Bargate, Ringwood, Bournemouth and West Gate, Winchester.
Not only did Ella Smith have these certificates for excellent work in
Religious Knowledge and Certificates of Merit from the Band of Hope, but she also had 2 certificates of merit (in 1922 and 1924) awarded for Good Conduct, Industry and Progress by Gosport and Alverstoke
Education Authority. The first certificate was awarded when she was in Standard III and the other, when she was in Standard V(a) and VI(b). She also had a certificate for proficiency in the use of a
Singer Sewing Machine, as well as various prizes.
