There was an orchard on the Hermitage land until March 1990. Just after the war, when some food was still rationed, people were very glad to buy apples and pears at low cost from the owners.

A former occupant of the present house had seen a ghost in the old house. It was an apparition of a short man wearing black trousers and a black shiny jacket. His hair was black and he seemed to have a muddy complexion. They called him “Friendly John”. Another person had sensed his presence, especially when he was worried or in difficulty. He found that when he was working in his study, the “presence” seemed to help him and had a soothing effect on him. Was he the ghost of one of the brothers – or of a monk?

Other people had seen a ghostly “lady in grey” – perhaps the housekeeper sister of the ‘Vigars’?.
