Memories of the Forton Area by Mr. F.W.J. Jenner

St. John’s Square consisted of 21 houses and was at the centre of a busy little community.  I and my younger brother and sister were all born at No. 8 St. John’s Square and attended St. John’s School from 1925, when I started there, until 1938, when my sister, the youngest of us, left at 14, and the family moved away from the area.

In our time, the teachers in the infants’ school were:-

Miss. E. Sinclair Miss. Rainford Miss. Williams Miss. McKenzie Miss. Bristow

The headmaster of the boys’ school was Mr. B.T.R. Williams  and the other teachers were:-

Mr. Thomas Williams (who we called “Mr. Thomas”, as he had the same surname as the headmaster).

Mr. Stainer Mr. Lewcock Mr. Maunder

The headmistress of the girls’ school was Miss. S.A. John’s, who was succeeded by Miss. Pook on her retirement.  The other teachers were:-

Miss. Edwards Miss. Wild Miss. Cooper

Miss. Haywood, who went to Canada on exchange with Miss. Leaman for one year.

I have numbered all the shops, etc., on the map, which is not drawn to scale but just from my memory. (The Map is on the next page)
