Fort Brockhurst is one of the ‘Palmerston Follys’, the line of Forts and other defences built in the 19 century to defend Portsmouth Harbour. They were not used at the time, was this because they were expected to be so effective that the French did not bother, was it because they had enough problems elsewhere or because they had no intention to attack Portsmouth?

Now the fort is run by English Heritage, you are able to visit it. It is also used for music events such as this years summer festival, where Atomic Kitten were not able to turn up, though I understand that Rolf Harris filled the spare time very well.

I intend to add information about other forts in the future, I have even taken some photos of Fort Rowner on a tour during the Heritage Weekend.
