- I have been a regular visitor to your site which is informative, you are obviously very well informed about Gosport, my family is five generations Gosport and my father was born in The Queen Head Brockhurst when his in laws were the landlords. How can I find our more about the pub etc. His fr in law also had a pub at station approach. Can you help me with his at all or point me into the right direction.  Ann (added 20th April 2008)

Vic Hutfield  built it in 1909 and it hung in the roof of Stapleton's (Reekies) for many  years, indeed it was there in the mid 1950's. I have a letter stating that Vic  was still in possession in 1964. Any help would be most welcome.  Brenda

- Martin I was wondering if you Know of a Clairvoyants Circle in Gosport.

- William Rowland b 1809 Gt. Baddow, Essex, (Mary Ann Rowland's father) was a career soldier in the 78th Essex Regiment during the Kaffir War (?which one). When he retired from the Army (he was a tailor by trade) he became a prison warder, at one time at the District Prison, Forton.  Mary Ann Rowland was his last child b 1849 and the census shows her as being born in various places throughout the censuses but my best guess is Cape of Good Hope. However, it says on some census this was Cape Colony (which it could well be as her father was out there) but I just wondered, because one census says "Cape of Good Hope, District Prison, Forton" whether he was a warder/tailor on one of the ships for prisoners in Portsmouth Harbour. Do you have any knowledge of a ship used as a Prison in Portsmouth with the name "Cape of Good Hope" Sue Cassidy

- Does anybody have any information on St Georges, being the first place the survivors of the battle of Rorkes Drift were billited on there return? How long wre they there and did this include the VC winners from that famous battle? Phil Chambers, (Added 6th July 2008)

I am  looking into my family history and have discovered my great,great-grandfather  was married in the Stoke Road Chapel in Alverstoke in 1874.  I am  trying to find a photo of the church but have had no luck. Are any of the  photos on your site of the church I am looking for? Michelle Swan (Added 6th July 2008)

- I wonder whether anybody has information (and/or  photos?) of Gomer Farm at Stokes Bay? My grandmother, Hilda May PETT, was born  there in 1888. Also does anybody have any photos of Holly Street  before its redevelopment? My other grandmother, Ellen Martha LAMING, was born at  No. 21. My e-mail is tna_oz@bigpond.net.au (don't miss out  the underscore!) and I don't mind it appearing on the site. Angela Caldwell South Australia (Added 6th July 2008)

- Newspaper Archives 1940's-1950's I am trying to research my family history, and I know my grandfather lived in Gosport with his first wife at 157 Stokes Road, Gosport. Later on I understand there was a bigamy case against him, I was just wondering If you would have access to any local newspapers archives in Gosport, or know where to access them to see if there was any evidence of the bigamy case.  Jane

Hello Jane, You would need to make a personal visit to Portsmouth Central Library to view the microfilm of back numbers of Portsmoth Evening News? You would need specific dates/month of events, its not computerised. Peter

- I am trying to find out as much information as possible about a building at the bottom of Monks walk, which I believe used to be Frater lane, The building has been used as a gym since around the mid fifties and has had some very famous people pass through it, and was also used for T.V. programmes like the Krypton factor and others in it's day as well as being used by the Royal Marines and the SAS for training purposes, but Don Styler the proprieter tells me it used to be a military hospital after the first and second world war but we believe it may go back as far as the Crimea, any help would be gratefully received. Also I have met several people who remember their Mum's, Aunts and other relatives telling stories such as ripping up bed sheets etc. to use as bandages for the said hospital or actually working there but cannot find anyone who have first hand stories so any stories would be fantastic. Thankyou Patrick Vinall
